Annual Waxwing Party

Every year the Bohemian Waxwings
come and devour every berry
on my mountain ash tree.
They arrived two weeks ago
and had another celebratory
and pre-migratory stuffing session.

  1. For years, I thought those birds were called Cedar Waxwings. But you've cleared up my misconception -- Bohemian Waxwings!!! I looked at photos of Cedar Waxwings on Wikipedia and their colouring is completely different.

  4. Fabulous waxwing photos! Funny, they never come for our mountain ash berries. In fact, the berries fall off the tree and our dog eats them. But the waxwings come early in the year for our ornamental crabapples, the ones high up where the deer didn't get them. By then, they've been frozen and thawed and have fermented, so the Waxwings have a merry old time. We're only just across the province from you, so maybe the difference is in the elevation or something. Very interesting.

  7. Oh, wow, these are gorgeous birds and you captured them so well. The detail on the wings is incredibly beautiful. I'd love to have them visit my yard; they can have all the berries they want from my holly trees. :)

  8. They seem to steer clear of our mountain ash too. Wonder why that is? Haven't even had a sniff of them in our garden either.
